I Love Jesus Therefore I’ll Keep His Commandments

There is this YouTube video that titled, “Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus”, posted by Jeff Bethke. This video has gained a huge popularity and followers. At this moment, this video has over 18 million hits and over 300 thousand “likes”. I’m not surprised with the huge support for this video. I already know that people hates religion. It’s not only Jeff Bethke who feels that way. The alarming thing about this video is that Jeff Bethke doesn’t know what he’s preaching. He says he loves Jesus but hate religion. I wonder why did he loves Jesus? Because Jesus died for him? Where did he get that information? From the Bible? It’s nice to know that he believes in the Bible and maybe read it too. But I’m sure he hasn’t read the whole book yet.

First I would like to discuss the meaning of Religion. I like what Lenny Esposito wrote about it:

When most people talk about religion, they understand that it involves an entire system of thought, including what God is like, what it means to be moral, and what kind of worship practices are acceptable, and when you talk about worship, you are specifically talking about relating to God in some way. So relationship does come into play when we are talking about religion!”

He wrote it in referring to people who talk much about the importance of Relationship to God rather than religion.

He also called these shallow Christians as “bumper-sticker Christians”, who embraces nice and neat slogans about Christianity instead of really knowing what it’s all about.

And may I add my definition with Lenny’s, religion is studying about God and spirituality and applying it to ourselves and daily living.

Jeff Bethke didn’t mention any true religion in his poem. It’s all hypocrisy. I’m aware that there are religions like these that exists but he should also be aware that there are true religion that exists too.

Here is Jeff Bethke’s poem and my challenge to his words.

The phrases on number one are my collection of his statements regarding Christianity. These phrases only refer to hypocrisy, not on true religion. I feel sorry for him for not finding and experienced the true religion. Just because he didn’t find the treasure of gold doesn’t mean gold doesn’t exists.

1.       If religion is so great, why has it started so many wars?;

Why does it build huge churches, but fails to feed the poor?;>

…Yet God in the Old Testament actually calls the religious people whores;
Religion preaches grace, but another thing they practice,
Tend to ridicule Gods people, they did it to John the Baptist,
…Cant fix their problems, so they try to mask it,
…Not realizing that’s just like sprayin perfume on a casket
Let’s dress up the outside, make things look nice and neat,
Its funny that’s what they do to mummies, while the corpse rots underneath,
Now I ain’t judging I’m just saying be careful of putting on a fake look,
Because there’s a problem if people only know that you’re a Christian by that little section on your facebook
…Which is so different from religious people, and why Jesus called em fools
The Son of God not supported self-righteousness, not now, not then.
2.       Because the problem with religion is that it never gets to the core,

It’s just behavior modification, like a long list of chores.

  • Jeff doesn’t understand that we need a behavior modification to live in harmony. Although we are saved unconditionally, we still need a behavior modification to live in peace, in harmony and most importantly, to please God.

3. Its like saying you play for the lakers just because you bought a jersey

  • This phrase is true. But it doesn’t mean that there is no true Laker player. Same goes to religion. Just because there are hypocrite Christians doesn’t mean there are no true Christians.

4. I was acting like church kid, while addicted to pornography.

I’d go to church on Sunday, but on saturday getting faded,

Acting as if I was simply created to have sex and get wasted.

  • This is another great example of hypocrite Christian. Again, just because there is a Christian who is addicted to pornography doesn’t mean that his religion is false. If Jesus has Judas in his only twelve Apostles, what more in a congregation with hundreds of members?

5. Don’t you see hes so much better than just following some rules? (Jeff is referring to Jesus here)

  • “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” – Matthew 5:17.
  • This verse came from Jesus himself. And in fact, Jesus has lots of laws and rules set by Himself for us. Although He broke some Jewish religious laws and traditions in His time, but He made it clear that He came not to destroy the law, but in fact, to fulfill it.

6. Now let me clarify, I love the church, I love the bible, and I believe in sin

  • Jeff Bethke said this phrase. I’m just wondering why he loved Jesus. How did he knew that Jesus died for him and where did he learned it. Where does he learn everything he knew about God? I guess he learned it all from his former religion.
  • If he loves the Bible, I wonder if he’s reading it. With this poem, I guess not. There are still so many things he needs to learn.
  • If he believes in sin, does he know what sin is and what is sinful?

7. One is the work of God one is a man made invention,

  • If religion is only a man made invention, then everything he says about religion including this poem is not true. Because like he said, he was once a member of a religion. And I’m sure that that religion taught him about the church, God, Jesus and his salvation, which he proclaims that he believes in right now.

What’s wrong with people today is that we don’t want any standards and laws. We want total freedom. We want to do everything we want and still get saved in the end. We have our own way of saving ourselves. Yes, Jesus is the ONLY way. But the thought of hating religion and loving Jesus is misleading. We can’t learn about Jesus in show business, sports, politics and academic school. Religion introduces Jesus to us including his personality, his desires, his commandments, etc. Religion also teaches us how to properly worship. Yes, God has a standard on worshiping. We hate that, don’t we? Why don’t we just love Him on our own way? Why can’t we eat all the fruits in the garden and still love Him?

And religion teaches us what God wants from us. Another problem with us is that we don’t want to sacrifice for God. We just declare that we love God but we don’t want to sacrifice for Him like Jesus did for us. What if, Jesus tells you that He loves you but, “I’m not going to die for you.”“This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.” – Matthew 15:8

Jeff Bethke was just like John Lennon who hates religion and thinks religion is just a useless dogma.

We need a religion. Not to be saved but to learn how to live properly, in a way God wants us to live.

Here is the complete poem of Jeff Bethke’s Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus.

What if I told you, Jesus came to abolish religion?
What if I told you getting you to vote republican, really wasn’t his mission?
Because republican doesn’t automatically mean Christian,
And just because you call some people blind, doesn’t automatically give you vision.

If religion is so great, why has it started so many wars?
Why does it build huge churches, but fails to feed the poor?
Tells single moms God doesn’t love them if they’ve ever been divorced
Yet God in the Old Testament actually calls the religious people whores

Religion preaches grace, but another thing they practice,
Tend to ridicule Gods people, they did it to John the Baptist,
Cant fix their problems, so they try to mask it,
Not realizing that’s just like sprayin perfume on a casket

Because the problem with religion is that it never gets to the core,
It’s just behavior modification, like a long list of chores.

In every other aspect of life you know that logics unworthy
Its like saying you play for the lakers just because you bought a jersey

But see I played this game too; no one seemed to be on to me,
I was acting like church kid, while addicted to pornography.
I’d go to church on Sunday, but on saturday getting faded,
Acting as if I was simply created to have sex and get wasted.

Spend my whole life putting on this façade of neatness,
But now that I know Jesus, I boast in my weakness.
If grace is water, then the church should be an ocean,
Cuz its not a museum for good people, it’s a hospital for the broken

I no longer have to hide my failures I don’t have to hide my sin,
Because my salvation doesn’t depend on me, it depends on him.
because when I was Gods enemy and certainly not a fan,
God looked down on me and said, “I want that man!”
Which is so different from religious people, and why Jesus called em fools

Don’t you see hes so much better than just following some rules?
Now let me clarify, I love the church, I love the bible, and I believe in sin
But my question, is if Jesus were here today, would your church let Him in?
Remember He was called a drunkard and a glutton by “religious men”
The Son of God not supported self-righteousness, not now, not then.

Now back to the topic, one thing I think is vital to mention,
How Jesus and religion are on opposite spectrums,
One is the work of God one is a man made invention,
One is the cure and one is the infection.

Because Religion says do, Jesus says done.
Religion says slave, Jesus says son,
Religion puts you in shackles but Jesus sets you free.
Religion makes you blind, but Jesus lets you see.

This is what makes religion and Jesus two different clans,
Religion is man searching for God, but Christianity is God searching for man.
Which is why salvation is freely mine, forgiveness is my own,
Not based on my efforts, but Christ’s obedience alone.

Because he took the crown of thorns, and blood that dripped down his face
He took what we all deserved, that’s why we call it grace.
While being murdered he yelled “father forgive them, they know not what they do”,

Because when he was dangling on that cross, he was thinking of you
He paid for all your sin, and then buried it in the tomb,
Which is why im kneeling at the cross now saying come on there’s room
So know I hate religion, in fact I literally resent it,
Because when Jesus cried It is finished, I believe He meant it.
